2023 New Zealand and South Pacific Pipe Band Championships

Christchurch 10-11 March 2023

The 2023 Nationals at Hagley Park was buzzing with 47 bands from all over New Zealand and some from Australia taking part this year.

With two days of intense competition our organisation had five bands entered, with 74 players taking part across Grades 1, 3, 4B and two juvenile bands.

Check out the photos from the event in our Photo gallery.

The organisation is very proud of the competitive performances produced and their results to go with it which were as follows:

For some of our youngest and newest players it was their very first National Competition and we couldn’t be prouder, particularly our Grade 4B band.

Our Grade 1 band produced three of the best runs it’s had at a National contest, laying down a solid marker for the next few years to come with its young team.Grade 1 street march (second place).Grade 1 street march (second place).

No competition is ever complete without a street march and again the bands delivered great results with placings of:

  • Grade 1 – 2nd place
  • Grade 3 – 4th place
  • Grade 4B – 6th place

After a short break, the bands are now into preparation for our “Pipin’ Hot” Concert, Friday 16th June 2023.

The next National Championships the bands will compete in is in Auckland in March 2024.

Band President Brendan Copeland said “he was absolutely stoked and although there would be two years of hard work to get cracking into it would absolutely be worth it”.

Hosting the Championships will be fantastic for all the families involved in pipe banding to be able to compete in front of their families and friends.

The event is great spectacle for the Southland community to come and enjoy the call of the pipes, the beat of the drums and the swirl of the tartans. Last time around 7,000 people either participated or attended the event.

The event will be livestreamed and watched by a global audience.
